IT Transfer to Support Filipino Farmers

Philippine Precision Farming gets a Mobile Upgrade

The Filipino Department of Agriculture has implemented a server that sends SMSs to farmers notifying them, depending on where they live, of the best time to plant and how much fertilizer to use.

The article was intriguing to me the first time I read it, but I recently came back to it because I just discovered a new program in Kenya that aims to do the very same thing – to design a system that consolidates agricultural research information and disseminates the knowledge tailored to the needs of individualĀ farmers. The new group is called the Kenya Agricultural Information Network.
